Baltic
Sea Region Inland Waterways Vision 2020
The inland waterways vision named Vision 2020
consists of seven items high-lightening subjects as logistic strategies
becoming regional without national boundaries, all year round short sea shipping and inland navigation including the western
part of Russia.
In December 2004 a
two-day seminar focusing on Vision 2020 was arranged in Helsinki with 13 presentations covering the
developing potential of waterborne transport. The seminar gathered 60 participants from 9
countries.

WP
1 - Infrastructure
The closing date for collection of new information
and updating of the INLATRANS database is now set
for 31 March.
After 31 March the work to transform the INLATRANS
database into a new and updated INTRASEA database will commence. Some
improvements will also be made to the front-page of the website.
The INTRASEA database will contain a number of links to other useful
websites and in particular to websites within the tourism industry. This will
avoid the necessity to arrange for someone to, on a more regular basis,
update the INTRASEA tourism part of the database (where information regularly
changes).
However, since commercial ports do not all have their own websites and
in order to keep the entire INTRASEA database updated at all times, there
will still be a need for some continuous updating procedure after the project
has been completed.

WP 2
– Regional Intersectorial strategies
How can the INTRASEA Vision 2020
be realised? WP 2 ”Regional Intersectorial
strategies” is now drafting the strategy how to realise the INTRASEA Vision 2020.
Within the WP 2 the work has been concentrated to
produce outputs which will be the basis for the strategy. At the last WP 2 meeting
in Stockholm 4 March 2005 three studies from Germany
was presented. The first one was “Examples - studies on spatial planning,
inland waterways, Germany”
and the second one “Examples of - planning for sustainable development for
inland waterways in Germany”
both studies were presented by Sylwia Klatka and Agnieska Soltysiak. The
draft of the report “Methods for assessing influence of Inland Waterways to
the regional development” the third
report from Germany
was presented by Jens Benecke.
The report from Finland named “Regional
dependence report” was also reviewed. From Russia a report named “Spatial
planning projects on tourism” was presented by Natalia Goutman
and the report shall also be integrated with the work within the INTRASEA WP5
– Tourism on Inland Waterways. Please visit the projects web site (www.intrasea.org), where
the reports soon will be available.
The next meeting shall take place in Finland
on 7-8 of June 2005. Probably the meeting shall be also a joint meeting
together with WP3 and WP4.

WP 3 - Modal
shift and river sea transport
WP
3 had their last WP meeting in Stockholm
combined with WP2 and WP 5.
WP3
is now calculating potential modal shift for Trollhättan,
Saima and Berlin-Szcezcin.
Relations as well concrete case examples are calculated. For example Berlin imports and
exports approx. 8 million tons seaborne cargo per year, that
could
be a potential cargo volume for inland waterway ships
Investigation
of a detailed transportation chain of paper from Finland
to Germany
as case example for transportation chain information system is also carried
out within WP 3.
Next
meeting will be 7-8th of June combined with the WP2 meeting
.
Axel Schönknecht
WP leader of WP 3

WP 4 -
Justification of investments in Inland Waterway Infrastructure
Within WP
4 the different approaches in the countries have been
discussed. The main participants are Germany,
Finland and Sweden who
have presented the national method and an applied calculation.
Russia
is closely following the work and will participate in the final analyses of how
the different approaches used by the countries affect the justification of
investments. It is planned to use a case study from Russia for
this analyses. Next meeting is planned to April 13 – 14 in Hamburg.
Anders Sjöbris
WP leader of WP 4

WP 5 - Tourism on inland waterways
The work to develop and disseminate the possibility to use the inland
waterways for national and international recreation is the focus for the INTRASEA
WP 5.
The main activities carried out have been the collection of
information on existing main tourist inland waterways and to make a general
market outlook. 90% of the turnover created by tourism related to inland
waterways is land-tourism; canals and water-ways serve as an attraction and
path of orientation for this kind of tourism. The last WP 5 meeting was
arranged in Stockholm
4 March in connection with the WP 2 and 3 meeting, among other things WP 5
discussed the possible improvement of the projects web site and the value of
a CD for presentation of Inland Waterway tourism possibilities
